The Complete Battery Service Workflow

Fast, accurate battery and electrical system analysis

Autel battery testers use advanced Adaptive Conductance technology to deliver fast, accurate battery analysis without applying a heavy load like traditional testers. Color-coded State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH) results provide technicians with a clear service recommendation, and batteries can be tested in or out of the vehicle—even at very low charge—helping avoid charging cycles that tie up service bays.

Guided battery replacement for modern vehicles

Autel tools provide step-by-step on-screen guidance to help technicians identify battery location, confirm the correct specifications, and follow proper replacement procedures—even on vehicles with multiple batteries or hard-to-access battery locations. A frequently updated battery information library keeps the tool current with the latest vehicle and battery specifications.

Industry-leading one-tap battery registration

Battery registration is critical on today’s vehicles where battery management systems control charging, manage electrical loads, and support start-stop operation. Autel tools provide industry-leading one-tap battery registration with support for 50+ vehicle brands, helping technicians complete the process quickly and correctly.

Restore vehicle systems after battery service

After battery replacement and registration, Autel tools help technicians restore vehicle systems affected by battery service. Guided functions help clear warning messages and perform required resets—such as power window and sunroof initialization—ensuring the vehicle leaves the shop fully restored.

Battery Test Quick Reference Guide

Battery Test Results In-Vehicle & Out-Vehicle

Result Technical Meaning What to tell the customer
Good Battery Meets industry standards “Your battery tested good and is operating normally.”
Good & Recharge Healthy battery, low State of Charge “Your battery is good, but it isn’t fully charged. We recommend charging it to prevent future starting issues.”
Charge & Retest* Must fully charge before diagnosis “We need to fully charge the battery before we can determine if it’s good or needs replacement.”
Replace Battery Fails performance standards “The battery has failed testing and should be replaced.”
Bad Cell Internal failure “There’s an internal failure in the battery. Replacement is required.”

State of Health (SOH):

Determines how strong the battery is compared to when it was new.

State of Charge (SOC):

Determines how much power it currently holds to give an accurate, real-time status of the battery.

*Charge & Retest:

Even though adaptive conductance testers don’t use a heavy load and can test batteries at lower voltage, they still require a minimum stable state of charge to be accurate. In rare instances, if the battery is too discharged (typically below about 11.5V), the internal chemistry becomes unstable. At that point, the tester can’t confidently tell whether the battery is:

  • A good battery that’s simply discharged, or
  • A bad battery that can’t hold a charge

So instead of risking a wrong result, it says “Charge and Retest”

Testing Every Battery with the Autel BT608

Unlike many traditional battery testers that apply a heavy load to check battery condition, the Autel BT608 uses advanced Adaptive Conductance technology. It sends a small, safe signal through the battery to measure how effectively it can deliver power.

This means the tester evaluates how easily electricity flows inside the battery and compares that performance to the rating the battery was originally designed to deliver. From this information, the tester determines both the State of Health (SOH) and the State of Charge (SOC) to give an accurate, real-time status of the battery.

Instead of simply checking voltage, it measures the battery’s true starting ability — helping determine whether it can reliably start your vehicle.

Battery Life Expectancy
  • Most vehicle batteries last 3–4 years under normal conditions.
  • Extreme heat, short trips, and heavy electrical loads can shorten lifespan.

Customer explanation:
“Most batteries need replacement about every three to four years, depending on driving habits and climate.”

Why Modern Vehicles Are Hard on Batteries

Today’s vehicles demand much more from batteries than older vehicles.

Increased Electrical Load:

  • Advanced infotainment systems
  • Large digital displays
  • Heated/ventilated seats
  • Driver-assist systems (ADAS)
  • Heated steering wheels
  • Remote start systems
  • Power liftgates
  • Cameras and sensors
  • Stop/Start systems
  • Constant computer modules (20–50+ modules in many vehicles)
