Keeping Up with New Models: Why Frequent Software Updates Matter

Originally published by TechShop on November 25, 2025

Today’s vehicles are packed with evolving technology, such as advanced driver-assistance systems, encrypted key systems, TPMS modules and connected diagnostics, just to name a few. Add the technology of electric vehicles and the need for secure gateway access, and for shops, that means scan tools must be current – not just to connect, but to diagnose, calibrate and repair vehicles successfully.

Software Update

To get the most current viewpoint on updates, TechShop contacted the experts at Autel for a Q&A session on the topic

TechShop: How do current updates improve speed and accuracy on common jobs like key programming or tire pressure sensor relearns?

Autel: These updates enhance speed and accuracy by addressing bug fixes and resolving system glitches.

Q: What’s the risk of relying on “it worked last year” logic when diagnosing a new vehicle with last year’s software?
A: Many newer vehicles may require server data. For this reason, we recommend keeping the soft ware fully up to date to ensure a reliable connection with our servers. In addition, new updates may occasionally release or unlock new features.

Q: What are the most misunderstood risks of skipping soft ware updates beyond just not being able to connect to a car?
A: Similar to the point above, many vehicles require both internet speed and a stable server connection. Additionally, without the latest soft ware updates, you many not gain full functionality available in newer versions.

Q: Have you seen a shift in how shop owners approach soft ware maintenance and are they starting to see it as critical infrastructure?
A: Yes, shop owners have a great understanding of soft ware updates, as they have become a requirement for servicing newer vehicles.

Q: How do your updates help a mid-size shop stay competitive with dealership-level diagnostics on the newest vehicles?
A: Updates allow shops to stay competitive by maintaining late-model soft ware at an OE level of functionality.

Q: Can you share an example of a shop that turned a recent soft ware update into immediate ROI?
A: Let’s use ADAS calibrations as an example: a shop that performs calibrations on vehicles will see an immediate return on investment, especially when performing post-scans for insurance carriers or calibration services.

Q: What’s the first sign that a shop is falling behind because of out-of-date soft ware and how do you coach them back up to speed?
A: For example, a shop may contact our Tech Support team regarding a specific late-model vehicle that requires a server connection and a tool covered under a valid subscription period.

Q: Is there a cost for updates on Autel tools?
A: Yes, update prices vary depending on the level of the tool.

Q: How do technicians obtain updates for their tools?
A: A user can purchase Total Care Protection (TCP) cards – which provide soft ware updates and extend warranty coverage for a year – and apply them to their tablet or make that purchase directly on their scanner. Firmware, system and vehicle coverage soft ware updates are available via Wi-Fi.

Q: What should a technician do when updates fail, and what are some of the common causes?
A: Customers should check common areas such as Wi-Fi, date and time settings (including the correct time zone) and validate their subscription period. The subscription can be verified through their account or on the scanner’s update page by checking the validity date.

Q: If an up-to-date scan tool still doesn’t have the necessary soft ware for any given repair, what options does Autel off er for technician assistance?
A: Our Tech Support team may ask the customer to submit a datalog. A datalog is recording of the diagnostic session that gets sent to Autel’s engineers so they can diagnose issues and improve the soft ware. Once received, our engineers will review the data to verify supported functionality. If needed, a soft ware update patch may be released in the near future.

As vehicle tech evolves, so does the soft ware that supports it. From unlocking ADAS calibrations to keeping up with encrypted modules and server-based diagnostics, regular updates are no longer optional, they’re operationally essential. Shops that treat soft ware like a core tool stay ready for what’s on the lot today and what’s coming tomorrow.

Looking forward, one key consideration is how soft ware updates will shape the future of diagnostics and shop efficiency over the next five years. With vehicle systems becoming more connected and complex, staying current may not just support today’s repairs, it could define tomorrow’s shop performance. Every update is a step toward better accuracy, faster service and more confident repairs. That’s a return no shop can afford to miss.
