Service Opportunities: Integrating ADAS Calibrations Now

Originally published by Shop Owner, June 16, 2025

Of the many highlights of the recent Motor and Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) report on ADAS in the aftermarket, perhaps the prediction that mechanical repair will exceed collision in the volume of ADAS-related repairs drew the most attention.

Technicians working in the aftermarket performed over 2 million ADAS calibrations last year, and that’s not even including those performed after glass replacement, the report said. MEMA believes the total market for ADAS parts will reach $1.7 billion by 2023.

Collision segments saw and continue to see the majority of ADAS service activity due to component replacement on crash-damaged vehicles. MEMA expects the industry to see a 6% growth through 2035. Meanwhile, the Mechanical repair segment expects to see an increase of 13 % over the same period. This rise is driven “by the normal wear and tear and eventual failure of ADAS components post-warranty, and the increasing penetration of ADAS into the vehicle parc to forecast the addressable market,” the report said. The report projects that mechanical-related ADAS service activity will surpass collision-related activity by 2031.

The time is now for mechanical shops to start performing ADAS calibration — before the onslaught of volume. The time is now to start learning, investing, and developing a workflow for your shop that will underpin the efficiency of your shop and the safety and service for your customers for today and tomorrow.

Even today, mechanical shops should be thinking about ADAS calibrations after many types of repairs and services. Increasingly, automakers are issuing statements and procedures that require ADAS calibrations to be performed after any service or repair that affects the alignment or positioning of the ADAS component; that includes four-wheel alignment, transmission or clutch replacements, and suspension modifications.

It is also essential to consider the increasing number of components being added to new vehicles as automakers continue to develop SAE L3 and L4 vehicles and how these sensors will be affected by an even wider range of vehicle repairs and services.

It’s easy for Autel to pivot to solutions for mechanical repair as our emphasis has always been a holistic approach to service and repair, starting with a pre-scan of all available systems. Using the Autel network topology feature, now in its second generation, technicians get an instant snapshot of the included vehicle systems and the communication networks they share. It illustrates how interdependent these systems are.

Recently, Autel partnered with Revv, a leader in AI software that identifies vehicle Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), to bring ADAS identification and a repair and service workflow to the mechanical vehicle repair industry. The partnership aims to address the growing need and opportunity to empower mechanical repairers with the information, technology, and equipment to calibrate the ADAS components affected by everyday mechanical vehicle repairs and services.
